Afghanistan: Is there Hope?
March 8th 2009 09:15
Afghanistan is a war that is not being won. That's what President Obama just said. Right now, the world is committing more troops. The President is talking about reaching out to moderate elements of the Taliban. That will be an interesting development.
As I continue to assess the "new thinking", I am quite convinced that there is a realization that there has to be a political solution. There is no way the West is going to bomb Afghanistan into peace. A different way is being worked out. The question is whether the people of Afghanistan who have suffered for so long will come to the table to forge a new future. This is especially so as the world celebrates Women's Day. The UN has just come out with a condemnation of Afghanistan. Honor Killings, Rape and forced marriages are widespread. This Al Jazeera Report sent shivers through my spine:
This shows the long road ahead that still must be traveled. Who would have the courage to lead Afghanistan out of darkness?
