Afghanistan: The "True" Vietnam
The latest reports out of Afghanistan are frankly scary. Just within the past few hours, I reviewed a dispatch about a Afghan Police Chief being killed when a Government Compound was attacked. Other attacks are continuing without end.
I also have been seeing that General McCrystal, the new Commander, has been doing an assessment which is due to be presented to the President soon. There are rumours that he would be asking for more troops. Apparently, General Jones, the President's National Security Advisor, has said that the request for additional troops will trigger a Presdential WTF. I am sure that the President will not be alone.
Right now, the authorized strenght is at 68,000. The problem is that this sacrifice is being contemplated to prop up a useless Government that can't tend to the basic necessities. As I have written here and in KP's sister site, Outsider Views, the Taliban hold sway over the entire country. Yet, the Obama Adminstration is looking to increase strength. After 8 years of blood, sweat and tears, there is nothing to show for it. There is no real end game. That's the problem. That's how Vietnam got to the way it did.
