The Future of the Party, Perhaps?
Meghan McCain spoke out against Ann Coulter a few days ago. I think her characterization of Ann Coulter was brave. Going after such stars takes guts. I guess she takes after her father in her outspoken views. Although I am not so sure about her views on Bobby Jindal.
As I thought about Ms. McCain's thoughts, I view her comments as pointing out a bigger challenge within Republicanism. Republicans have become irrelevant to the current debate about the future of the country. Republicans should at least listen to her and reassess the message. Reaganism is dead and buried!!! Hannity and the rest of the Fox Team can advocate Reaganism, but I urge them to read David Stockman's Memoirs and re-read Arthur Laffer's denounication of his own theories which served to underpine the so-called justification of Reaganism. Republicans should be smart to listen to folks like Ms. McCain. I also think that Senator McCain can truly fill a void, just like his predecessor Senator Goldwater did. He did more to tame the power of the far right in the 80's when he noted how Jerry Falwell should be treated. I hope Senator McCain remembers that as he gears up for his reelection effort in Arizona.
