Brief Political Tidbits of the Day....

The world never seizes to be amazing. There are events happening that warant our attention because some events truly work to be life changers. There are those, for instance, who still can't accept the fact that Barack Obama is President of the United States. For those who accept that fact, they seem to act like Children saying no to everything. The latest manifestation of it was a letter from the Republican House Leadership to the President telling the President that they would attend the proposed televised meeting on Healthcare if a number of pre-conditions were met. The key one is to start healthcare from scratch.
I have continued to write about how the Republicans seem to be either so out of touch with reality or simply do not care. People are dying. People can't afford to go to the Doctors. America is spending 17% of its' Gross Domestic Product on Healthcare with nothing to show for it except some real flashy technology. To add insult to injury, Anthem Blue Cross just announced that it is raising its' rates by 39%. I welcome the California Insurance Commisioner's decision to investigate this. What I do need to point out is that Pozner wants to be Governor of the State.
Congress, on the other hand, continues to make a fool of itself. One of the biggest fools, in my view, is Richard Shelby, the U.S. Senator From the State of Alabama. He has put a blanket hold of all nominees for Obama Adminstration posts. When I read that report, I wondered why. From what I understand, a number of the appointments are key appointments to the Department of Justice and Homeland Security. I also have seen reports that he wants to force the Adminstration to cancel the Boeing Tanker Contract and give it to Airbus that happens to have assembly plants in Alabama. As George W. Bush liked to say, "...this is just politics...". Although I respect his zealous representation of his State's interest, what he needs to understand is that the greater interests of the Country has to be brought into account. Mr. Shelby seems to forget that an Air Force Procurement Official and a Boeing Executive went to jail when the original fiasco was uncovered by Senator McCain.
As I thought about the political landscape, I became ever more distrubed by the arguments made by Steve Clemons in the Huffington Post. Although I enjoy his writings, I think his comments about the failure of the Obama Presidency and blaming it on the "Chicago Four" seems to be misplaced and misguided in a major way. Both the left and the right seem to have it in for the President. As I wrote in KP's sister site, outsider views, Sarah Palin and the Tea Party crowd really had a blast!! I have continued to underscore the fact that the President has his work caught out for him. He can't afford to back down on Healthcare. He has to push ahead with the wars and get them done while dealing with preventive measures to avoid a double-dip recession. On a side note, I was saddened by the death of John Murtha. He was one of the courageous few that actually gave voice to those of us who dared to speak out against the Iraq war. He was right and courageous.
I do wonder whether President Obama have what it takes? I believe he does. But, November 5, 2010 will be the next key milestone for the President and the Adminstration.
