Courage: A Rare Commodity
Earlier this week, I had the pleasure to meet a number of courageous meeting during a weekly roundtable I attend to discuss the political and economic issues of our day. These ladies were on the front lines at a major local hospital who began a simple campaign to stand up for the rights for better working conditions. They wanted to bring a union to the hospital. It began an odyssey that no one should have to go through.
One of the organizers got fired because she was accused of manipulating her time sheet. She was given a write-up before she was summarily fired. The total change in her time sheet was 2.5 Minutes. It was only 2.5 Minutes!!!! It turns out that she depended on the clocks on the hospital and the discrepancies were kind starking. Another lady filed a sexual harrasement complaint which was summarily dismissed after a supposed investigation. Another was accused of a racist remark against a patient, was given a summary warning and then was laid off. Some of the positions as Service Partners were eliminated to save money ostensibly at a non-profit institution.
Courage these days is a rare commodity. These five ladies spoke up for what was right. I told them to expect a long and dirty fight. They understood it. I salute them for wanting to do the right thing and to fight for their rights. The fight for justice is the story of America. I wish them well.
