Fujimori's Conviction

Alberto Fujimori was convicted by a Court in Peru and sentenced to 25 years for ordering massacres. The judges termed the crimes as "crimes against humanity".

I remember when Fujimori ruled Peru with an Iron Fist. I especially remember images of him directing pursuit of Shinning Path guerillas during the dying days of his Presidency. I also thought he was a coward when he faxed in his "resignation" from Japan. Why he returned to Chile to run for the Presidency again surprised me. He apparently misread the Chilean Mood especially as that country continued to come to grips with Pinochet years.

As I continued to track the case, I was ecstatic to see how the case was conducted. This case showed a profound sense of maturity for Peru in particular and Latin America in general. It showed that accountability is now the order of the day. The whole world should take notice and learn from it.
