Going To The Chapel

same sex marraige
Yesterday at 5:01 PM PST California opened their doors to same sex marriage. One small step for LGBT, one giant leap for equal rights.

Or so it seemed.

Sadly, even with same sex marriage legal in California those couples who are finally getting married are still not receiving all of the benefits of marriage. While they will enjoy the state benefits, there are many federal marriage perks that none of these happy couples will be able to receive. There are over 1,000 federal rights and benefits from marriage that are still out of reach.Thank you Defense of Marriage Act.

Or not.

Now I should be honest here I'm not a fan of marriage. At all. I could wax on about how the institution of marriage is not the Happily Ever After fairy tale that it is made out to be, but instead I'm just going to point out a much better written post on the same thing. Twisty's post on marriage is a must read.

Not all gays are fans of marriage either. Jack of Feministe isn't celebrating gay marriage in California with everyone else.

Because the marriage equality movement is largely predicated on the notion that us queers are just like “everyone else,” meaning mostly white, mostly middle-class or up, gender conforming monogamists. You know, the non-threatening queers. The rest of us should apparently find a nice closet to go hide in for a while, lest we threaten the rights that are apparently meant for the more upstanding, respectable members of the LGsomeotherlessimportantlette rs community.

Not all families across the US are made of two married adults with kids. Having the option to be so is absolutely wonderful, and I am glad that this option is becoming more available to all US citizens. However when it comes at the detriment of those who choose not to fall into that stereotype it becomes just another way to keep people in line. Why not extend family rights to all families? Let families define themselves in their own unique ways. Call me an idealist.

I see your point -- however it's got to be a step in the right direction? Better than the Californian law not being passed at all?

There's no pleasing some people.
