HIllary Clinton's Job Interview for Secretary of State
Hillary Clinton's confirmation hearings for Secretary of State began yesterday. I had a chance to catch the first half to understand the thinking on this. I was quite disappointed to hear Richard Lugar and the rest of the Republicans pounce upon the Clinton Global Initiative and the Clinton Foundation. It seems to me that the agreement struck between Bill Clinton and the Obama Folks ought to be enough. Bill Clinton said, "...I'd do whatever they want." Why the Republicans want to go beyond this is a bit mind boggling. I also found Mr. Vitter focusing on this subject idiotic. Now, I yearn for guys like Bill Nelson who focused on a more substantive discussions like the discussion Bill Nelson had about the American missing in Iran. I found this exchange on MSNBC to be insightful on this:
I was hoping for a more forceful statement on Gaza and the need to just stop. I did not see that. But, I guess Barack Obama is waiting til January 20. That's probably why Israel is continuing to pound Gaza back to the stone age. One thing I am very excited about is the notion of "Smart Power" which to me means simply this: We will talk first and ask questions later. Diplomacy and respect for the rule of law appears to be the way things are going to be. Some will be jealous. My response to that, so what. The Clintons are indeed back and will continue to be a force for change.
We're overdue for a new day. It is about time.
