Iran's Revolutionary Guard Is Setting the Tone...
The Commander of the Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corp (IRGC or Pasdaran) is a man by the man of Jafari. He is a Lt. General appointed by the Supreme Leader and answers to him. In a recent speech reported on Iranian State Media, he reitrated the role of the Revolutionary Guards as the "vanguard and protector of the Revolution". As I read his speech, I thought that the duty of the country's armed forces was to protect the nation, not the revolution. But, this narrow-minded view of the world and the IRGC's continued dominance speaks to the way the country is now governed. The country is under defacto martial law. They don't say it. But that's the way it is.
On a side note, Mohsen Rezaii, one of the defeated Presidential Candidates spoke at a ceremony at another IRGC base. He is a former IRGC commander who is now the Secretary for the Expediency Council. As such, he is a key establishment guy. He is also reportedly worth around 600 Million Dollars. He spoke up to defend the position of Khameini. I was laughing when I read how he noted that it was the results of the leader's decisions that the Country was saved and he was thankful for the leader. I guess he has no choice otherwise his faith would become the same as Abtahi and others who were detained for 4 months and apparently have just either been released or about to be released. It is just another way for the IRGC to increase its' dominance at the expense of sound goverance and accountability which is in large measured enshrined in the Islamic Republic Constitution that has apparently lost its' relevancy to the larger mission of "protecting the Revolution".
