Israel & Palestine: Good Grief!!!!
January 12th 2010 06:59
Israel has escalated the attack on Gaza. There have been rockets which again landed on Israel over the past few days. I have not been able to ascertain whether the Palestinians provoked it or not. I am certain that the Palestinians are not fools. They destroyed themselves by how they behaved irresponsibly and the corruption that ultimately brought Hamas to power. So, who knows?
Beyond the internal Palestinian dynamics, there is the issue of the fence that the Israeli Prime Minister has ordered to be built. He has also closed Israel's southern border. In addition, Egypt has been suporting the blockade by not allowing vital stuff to go in. I am trying to really understand the delays behind allowing the Viva Palestina convoy to cross through Egypt. Now, the Egyptians want to build a fence to prevent the tunnels from going through as they have. This is as they continue to be involved in trying to mediate the inter-palestinian conflict and to help free Gilat Shalit.
I am sure Omar Suleyman, Egypt's Intelligence Chief, is a good man. But he still works for Mubarak. Until Mubarak is around, the fate of the world's largest Prison will hang in the balance. I wonder if Mubarak understands what is truly going on. In the meantime, Israel will continue to put the squeeze on Gaza to no end. I do wonder if the Obama Adminstration has the backbone to go through with an implied threat to withhold financial guarantees to Israel, though. George Mitchell raised the issue in response to Israel's moves to expand its settlement activities in the West Bank despite international pressure. The Israeli Finance Minister claims that they can raise the funds without US Help. But, the fact that George Mitchell spoke shows the level of the frusturation in Washington. I also think that this would not have been brought up unless the President himself was aware of it.
The drama continues on.....
