Israel: The Battle over "loyalty"
I find the debate over the loyalty oath in Israel very troubling. It reminds me of what the late U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy did with spreadheading witch hunts, the passage of the Smith Act of 1950 and other so-called anti-subversie measures that has been one of the darker periods in American history.
It seems to me that the State of Israel should be quite forthcoming in its' treatment of minoriites in light of the terrible tragedy it has suffered. Israeli Arabs constitute over 20% of the population of the State of Israel. It should insure that minorities are protected. I also seem to think that Mr. Lieberman, the Foreign Minister, should also be especially sensitive to freedom in light of his background as a emigre from the former Soviet Union. As I continue to assess this very disturbing debate, I wonder who would step and show courage as Mr. Welch did when he stepped up to that maniac almost 55 years ago:
