Joe Wilson: A Sign of Troubling Times
Joe Wilson, the South Carolina Congressman, got his hand slapped by the U.S. House of Representatives for his "you lie" outburst during the President's speech last week. He claims that he made an apology and the matter was closed. But, the reality is otherwise!!!
Unfortunately, the man seems to have no shame. This outburst brings out the worst fear that many have had about racism in America. There seems to be an undercurrent of animosity towards President Obama especially by the Conservatives about the fact that a black man is in charge. The notion of a honest debate seems to have been overtaken by everything else but the truth.
The conservatives are on a war path. The most extreme example is what Glen Beck and Bill O'Reilly talk about. Glen Beck, especially, is quite an entertainer. As Howard Fineman of Newsweek noted, he is making a lot of money (some $ 23 Million) trying to divide and tell the world that Beck only knows what America is about while the rest of us who dare to disagree with him are unAmerican. As Joe Wilson reaches out to the conservative community even more asking for "....help more than ever before. I've been under attack by the liberal left for months because of my opposition to their policies, especially government-run healthcare. And they've run commercials in my home district and flooded my office with angry phone calls and unruly protestors. They've done everything they can to quiet my very vocal opposition to more government interference in our lives. Now, it's gotten even worse...." (Source: http://www.humanevents.com, retrieved 9/16/2009), the rest of the Republican gang continues on the fiction that the President is indeed lying and just want to leave things as they are. I wonder if they realize that the people expect and demand a lot more than the status quo.
