KP Newsflash (8/27/2010): OMG!!!!
I have been monitoring the BBC World Service. I just got done listening to reports that apparently the Taliban had plans to attack David Cameron's Helicopter during his visit to Afghanistan. British Intelligence found out about it just in time to have the helicopter diverted. The intelligence even went as far as knowing which Helicopter he was in.
This reminds me of the Movie Purple Hearts. It is based in Vietnam and chronicles the story of a US Navy Doctor. There is a scene when he and his roommate talk about the state of affairs. The Doctor notes that he found out there is no real safe place in Vietnam. He noted that they (that is the Viet Cong) could attack anyone, any place--including right in the middle of the Hospital. So, in effect, what is the point? It was the reality then as it is now.
President Obama has told us that Afghanistan is not Vietnam. The threat against Prime Minister Cameron shows the extent of the profound challenge being faced. There have been too many such incidents in Afghanistan to really question the blood and treasure being spent. There needs to be a thought for a better way. Will all parties have the courage to do so?
