KP Newsflash II (5/10/2010): Bob Bennett of Utah is Out..and now....
The Republican Party's so-called purity campaign is in full swing!!!
This past week-end saw the rejection of Bob Bennett as a nominee of the Party. He was beaten by the favorites of the Tea Party crowd because they were mad at him for voting for TARP and Healthcare Reform. Supposedly, one of his opponents is a guy who believes in a Strict Constructionist View of the US Constitution and rejects "big government".
What I find distrubing in this development is the utter lack of responsiblity and understanding of what is truly going on by the Tea Party Crowd and all those who are claiming the mantle to ride the level of discontent that is going on in Washington. I don't think anyone liked TARP. Yet, the country was facing a total financial meltdown. Lehman was allowed to fail and it brought the entire house of cards down. Bold, decisive action was needed. Inaction would have meant conditions even worst than the Great Depression. As for their so-called objection to Senator Bennett's vote for Healthcare, I am still trying to figure out what a credible alternative there is besides basically doing nothing. To add insult to injury, I saw a press release from Mike Pence, the House Republican Conference Chair, urging Vice President Biden to tell the Europeans not to bail out Greece and avoid a "Government" bailout plan.
As I write this, European Governments have just approved a 1 Trillion Dollar Emergency Stablization Plan for the Euro. Pence and the rest of the so-called Tea Party folks have to realize what is going on in Greece. I realize that Greece was built on a house of cards.
Advocating inaction in the name of "saving money" borders simply on criminal contempt for the man on the street. Economies around the world continue to be on the edge. It was sad to see an icon of the Senate almost be in tears as he reflected upon his loss. Bob Bennett did the right thing for the sake of the Country. I hope he finds solance in what he did and not be discouraged just because a bunch of radical rightwing idealogues happened to hijack a party with such a proud tradition.
