KP Tech Watch (8/4/2010): Wow!!!
Since my last write-up, the tables sure have turned on Technology. The one thing that blew me away was the fact that Android Phones have overtaken iphones as the phone of choice for current Smart Phone users. The staggering statistic I have seen is around 200,000 phones a day. This, of course, is as a story in this week's Fortune Magazine asks the question: Is Google Dead?
The Google question is something that I would be taking up over the next number of weeks. The rise of Google and the power that it has will be quite evident for some time. I am a power user and truly believe in what it is doing. But, the question is Google's raison d'etre and whether that will continue to be relevant. That's the essential question right now as Facebook continues to grow ever more, Apple continues to innovate and new players emerge every day. It sure makes it quite interesting, to say the least.
I wanted to conclude by one statement Eric Schmmit, Google's CEO made, that has far reaching implications for how our World has changed. At a conference in Lake Tahoe yesterday, he talked about how 5 Exabyte of Data was created from the Dawn of Civilization through 2003. Now, the same amount of data is being created every day. He said that the people are simply not ready to deal with that kind of data deluge. I reject that notion because if companies like Google insure that Net Neutrality is in fact preserved, they won't need to have to worry about the people. The people will come, will consume the data, will want more and will figure out a way to consume it ever more. But the reports of the deal between Google and Verizon are true about prioritizing internet traffic, this will change the whole ball game. As I briefly noted in a recent Facebook posting, I truly hope that the FCC won't let the companies get away with it.
