KP Tech Watch (9/4/2010): The Advent of Ping...and Scared 2 Death!!!
I admit that I am worried. I am worried because I can identify what Nicholas Carr recently talked about in an interview in the Christian Science Monitor. He talked about his own trouble reading at length and thinking as deeply. As I have contemplated going digital, I am truly identifying with it. And I consider myself a "digital native" because of my work here at "outsiders" and beyond.
This has led to think about and assess whether we can truly realize that our brains are being rewired in a major way. Between our iPad's, Kindles, Vook and the rest of the digital devices at our fingertips, we have to figure out to change how we do business. I have been one of the guilty ones in looking at my mobile screen and have tried to discipline myself not to do especially in meetings.
The need to figure out how to somehow not be so wired is something that I am increasingly worried as to whether we can truly achieve. The major tech players seem to continue to count on his being ever more online and ever more engaged. That's why I view the rollout of Ping, Apple's new Music Social Media service, to be of particular interest. I am probably in the minority in questioning why even to have such a service. Why do I want to go there when I can get my music on Pandora, see who likes music by connecting it with my facebook page and have fun!!! What I do see, though, is Apple potentially eventually rolling out a Pandora-Killer at some stage down the line as it dominates music through iTunres.
There are those who say (and I am one of them) in noting that it was the advent of iTunes that helped to save the Music Industry. TV and Movies are coming next as iPad and its' offshoots continue to gain further traction. We are yet to pay the price, though, for this massive digitzation of our World.
The story is yet to have an ending....
