KP Week-End (2/28/2010): Jim Bunning's Stunt
February 28th 2010 23:25
Jim Bunning is a United States Senator from the State of Kentucky. He is retiring after the current session. But, he is making quite a splash!!!
Right now, he has objected to a bill in the Senate to extend unemployment benefits. He says that he wants a way to pay for it. I see nothing wrong with that. What I have a problem with is that these are not ordinary times. When I visit the local Job Center, I overhear people all the time clammoring for and expecting unemployment benefits. People are depending on this meager stipend from the Government. The stories that Democratic Senators talked about was just tragic. Yet, this did not move Mr. Bunning.
As I briefly listened to the debate, I wondered where Mr. Bunning was when all the tax cuts and the runaway spending was going on during the Bush years. I also could truly see the frustruation in Dick Durbin's voice as he spoke on this telling the Jim Bunning that, "...the Senator from Kentucky just doesn't get it...". As always, the Republicans spoke up for him--I was not surprised by that at all.
Jim Bunning's stunt is another symptom of what is wrong with Republican party of today. This is a party that is interested in one thing and one thing only: getting back into power. They think that they could do a re-write of 1994. My read on the political mood of the country is otherwise. Time will tell.
