KP Week-End (5/17/2010): The Disaster in the Gulf of Mexico
As I write this, I have seen reports that BP supposedly has been successful in getting the Oil siphoned off into tankers to begin stemming the tide as the work continues to cap the well. I have also seen reports of a slick developing on the bottom of the Ocean partly because of the chemicals being applied by BP to prevent it from hitting the shorelines.
Tony Hayward's interview on the BBC about his call for offshore oil drilling to continue was audacious, to say the least. It took a lot of nerve for him to speak up for this after the multitude of breakdowns that occurred. The spectacle at the Congressional Hearing just added insult to injury.
The Government is not immune either. From the reports I have reviewed, it clearly appears that Ken Salazar should have moved immediately to clean up the Minerals Management Service and demanded concerte assurances. The idea that somehow offshore oil drilling has to continue is simply irresponsible and frankly criminal if this continues in this fashion.
