KP Week-End (9/4/2010): The Mosque Hysteria, The Peace Talks & Other Thoughts....

The Mosque Hysteria goes on. Yesterday, on Fox, Geraldo at Large featured a story about a backer of the Park51 project having contributed to the Holy Land Foundation which was found by the US Government to be a supporter of Hamas. The founders are currently in Federal Prison. The reporter featured on Geraldo talked about the fact that this man should have known about the contribution and the implications of it was that he was a terrorist symphatizer. As Geraldo congratulated this reporter, he "begged" for a compromise in light of the attacks on Islamic Institutions. Yet, he seemed to shirk responsiblity that he and the entire Fox organization have had to fan the flames of this true non-issue because of all that has been going on in the Country. Geraldo is one of the more reasonable ones. But, Gingrich seems to be on a war path that has no end:

I have written about the plight of the brave American who was one of the lost souls of 9/11--who happened to be a Muslim. I have to wonder to wonder what Gingrich's response is to this mother.

The Mosque Hysteria is really important becuase it goes into the heart of what the perception of the United States is around the World. There are over 1 Billion Muslims around the World. There are two main tenants of Islam that is apparently lost in this hysteria: Rahman and Rahim. This means basically peace and reconciliation. Yet, the hysteria works to undermine the attempts by the United States to forge a lasting peace. This is as Iraq continues to be without a Government, Afghanistan rages on, Hamas is on the prowl and Iran continues to remind the World that the talks are doomed to failure. Although the likes of Liz Cheney, BIll Kristol and the gang that gave us Iraq don't care, there needs to be a true battle for the hearts and minds of the people of the Middle East. The Bush Adminstration tried to do that by enlisting moderate personalities like the Park51 Imam while Liz Cheney was in the State Department. So, why all the change all of a Sudden? I have to wonder...

Moving on the Middle East, I continue to be concerned as to whether the talks will actually bear fruit. As talks continnued, Hamas fired rockets and Israel initiated Airstrikes. But, on the US Home Front, the Neo-Cons started another front group to help derail the peace process. This is another group led by Bill Kristol and Gary Bauer. Gary Bauer's view is that Jews have a right and that Palestinians have no right. Thankfully, the Israeli Prime Minister is not listening to these guys because they seem to want to out-do the Israelis. I also am heartened by the continued rise of organizations like JStreet who seem to have a concerted effort to want to educate in the face of a massive campaign to have the vision of a two-state solution discredited before they even begin.

Why can't we give peace and reconciliation a chance? Is it that much to ask?
