KP Week-End Notes (10/25/09): Will the Real McCain Stand Up?
This past week saw the U.S. Federal Communications Commision put in place the Six Principles to insure Net Neutrailty. It appears that the conservatives are nervous at the moves being made by the FCC. John McCain has just introduced legislation to oppose "Government Regulation" of the Internet. According to Senator McCain's Website, he believes that the proposed rule by the FCC will stiffle innovation.
Now,I find this very interesting. Although I commend Mr. McCain for being a late convert to the digital age, it seems to me that his legislation can be better called, The Telecom Companies Bill of Rights. This will hand power to AT&T, Comcast and Time Warner. These guys are such that they not only control content, they can also control the way that the content is distributed. They can block content and ration information. Mr. McCain seems to either not realize that or is going against the very principles that he has pushed for. I had hoped that after his gracious concession speech, he would be the Old McCain again. But, he is running for Re-Election. J.C. Hayworth, the so-called Conservative Congressman, is touted as someone who will challenge him. So, he has some challenges within his party. The only explanation I have is that he is trying to be a conservative's conservative. What happened to being principled? Will the real Mr. McCain stand up?
