KP Week-End: The Quest For Food Security

I have been writing about our World and the constant challenges we face. The economic calamity we have all lived through has made such a profound impact on the lives of all that its' impact is yet to be felt. Although economic security has been in the news, there is one thing that is not in the "headlines", but just as important--Food Security!!!

There are certain realities that is known. Our planet currently has over 6 Billion People. The 6 BIllion People have to be fed and housed. From the brief reading I have done, feeding the population continues to be of major concern. What some countries are doing is to buy up land in countries to secure food supplies for themselves. Recently, I saw a report in Beirut's Daily Star about Gulf Countries making moves into Eastern Europe to buy up land for their food security. They have been doing so because of the relative political stability. This is especially true due to all Eastern European Countries being part of the European Union.

Food Security will be one of the key subjects I would be talking about and assessing in subsequent write-ups. Mankind need two things to survive: Food and Water. As it stands now, Mankind is doing a fine job in insuring that both are in short supply. There are those around the world who are trying to change it. But, I have to wonder if it is too little, too late in light of the current tragedy in the Gulf, the unfolding tragedy in the Pacific Ocean's Mile of Trash and of course Climate Change. I do remain hopeful--although that hope is tempered by the realities I continue to see daily throughout the World.

The scant regard for the long term is dangerous and irresponsible. Our planet is as fragile and tempermental as ever. We seem to forget that in the quest for the almighty dollar and the short-term fix we seem to be in. In more ways than one, the wakeup call has already occurred. The question is whether we have the true courage to realize it.
