The choice of images is shocking on many levels. First there is the not-so-silent dog whistle to the racists out there of "Look at this black man mingling with these pretty, blonde white women!" I'm sure that McCain's camp will deny they meant that particular aspect, yet the images are hard to miss.
Then stepping back you begin to question the choice of celebs he used. Britney, while once famous for being a teen pop star is more recently famous for her mental issues. Paris, famous more for having a rich family and a well known name, has a negative reputation from her short stint in jail, leaked sex tapes, and not always wise choices. Exactly what message is McCain trying to send here with these choices. Surely there were many other, equally famous celebs that could have been chosen. Clearly there was a subtle connection he was hoping that people would make seeing these two celebs in an ad attacking Obama.
And of course looking beyond the images chosen and onto the words, we see that McCain is clearly up to his same old tricks. That is, if you don't know make it up and if you do know lie. Fact check called McCain out on his outright lie that Obama supposedly stated that he wanted a tax on electricty. And of course the lie of Obama saying no to offshore drilling has already been debunked from McCain's previous false advertising.
It leaves one to wonder, if all McCain seems to have to work with is his ability to lie to people who might be less informed than he seems to be and to make ads that fall somewhere beyond insulting, then why is he still the media sweatheart?

Without the controversy about this ad, he wouldn't even be in the media but for a ten second sound bite in response to Obama's five minute news segment.
He chose Britney and Paris because they get just as much new coverage for all the wrong reasons. Obama gets news coverage for making a funny face. Wolf Blitzer was discussing whether the media is in love with Obama with a Demo and a Repub strategist and interrupted them to report that Obama's plane had landed successfully, then never let the Republican finish what he was saying to cover the dramatic normal, uneventful landing.
Cracks me up. Obama gets rock star treatment on his "tour of duty" as one NBC anchor had the gall to call it, McCain gets brief mentions in an effort to pretend to be fair, and you want to forcefully and wrongly inject garbage into your interpretation.
And Obama did say no to offshore drilling. Here's the quote from the article you linked that supposedly "debunked" it:

I totally agree with you Summer. He gets away with saying all kinds of things, and flippidy flopping all over the place, but Obama is the one consistently taken to task over it.

I think you are too quick to jump to the conclusion that the ad is racist. Yes, the girls are known for their "bad behaviour" but no-one else gets as much media coverage as them (except maybe Lindsay Lohan, who is just as much a "bad girl"). What's more, the images of Britney and Paris shown portray them in a positive light, and they are still 'America's sweethearts' to many. I really did not think of racism at all in seeing the ad, and since I haven't heard of him mingling with the two women there's no real link there. I just think it's hilarious that McCain is hyping up Obama's popularity, thereby enforcing it.
My sources also tell me that Obama is not in favour of offshore drilling, which would not have any benefits for ages, and when they came they would hardly make much difference.
Go Obama!!!
...On second thoughts, maybe Obama could take a page out of the blonde divas' book and kiss someone of the same sex!

Smooth Political: But that would be directly attacking his age, which is ageism. McCain's ad doesn't attack his race, except those so sick that they see having popular white women in the ad is to conjure up black men raping white women. That is a sick, desperate stretch. Obama brought up race when he said the McCain campaign will try to scare us because he doesn't look like the Presidents on our money. He's right, those Presidents are green.
The McCain campaign people said they chose those two women because after Obama, they are number 2 and 3 in popularity AND they are as ready to lead as he is.
Sorry, Barack isn't ready. And for me, beyond that, he's the most liberal Senator in the Senate, has no experience as an executive (like Clinton did as a Governor) and is delusional on foreign policy. As you see by this McCain Ad, he's pretty delusional period.
