McCain To Working Class: Stop Whining So Much
July 11th 2008 12:51
McCain's economic adviser, Phil Gramm, says that the problems today in our economy are really just all in your head. If we'd just stop whining things would look much better. Really, you're just looking for things to be upset about. Come on, smile!
Now, where have we heard comments like this before? The blame the victim, it's all in your head, you're exaggerating, stop whining and smile ideas. Oh yeah, because it's a common line handed out to women who point out that in many cases things kind of suck for women. Oh it's just all in your head, you're just exaggerating, stop making a mountain out of a molehill. Pointing out instances of sexism generally gets miles of comments from people accusing you of just looking for things to complain about, that you're just whining, it's all in your head.
Of course Gramm doesn't speak alone. McCain has made several statements himself about how the current economic crisis is really just a psychological issue. Though, perhaps McCain's age is getting to him. All of those comments he has made seem to have been forgotten already. Really I hate to make this an age issue, but the only other option is that he's lying through his teeth.
McCain's issues with the economy go beyond just being all in our head. There was the little thing about lying about economists supporting his plans. And then there's the fact that despite that women are making less money then men and that when the economy goes bad women are often hit the hardest and he really just thinks you pretty gals only need some secretary training it's Obama's plan that actually wants to help women. Is it really surprising that Mr "It's all in your head" wouldn't be that concerned with women's economic struggles?
Obama's response:
*update*
It seems that Gramm is no longer speaking for McCain. Though at first Mccain was holding to what Gramm said, now they are trying to distance themselves from him. Via Think Progress:
How's that for being thrown under the bus?

"Phil Gramm's comments are not representative of John McCain's views," read a campaign statement. "John McCain travels the country every day talking to Americans who are hurting, feeling pain at the pump and worrying about how they'll pay their mortgage. That's why he has a realistic plan to deliver immediate relief at the gas pump, grow our economy and put Americans back to work."

GERSH: Is Senator Gramm still giving advice to Senator McCain?
HOLTZ-EAKIN: No.

How's that for being thrown under the bus?

THE G.O.P. STANDS FOR GUARDIANS OF PLUNDER, PRIVILEGE OR PLUTOCRATS. TAKE YOUR PICK.
THEY HAVE A BETTER GRASP ON FOREIGN POLICY ISSUES -- AT TIMES; CERTAINLY BETTER ON ABORTION AND OTHER HOT-BUTTON SOCIAL ISSUES,
BUT ON DOMESTIC ECONOMIC ISSUES -- SAVE FOR DRILLING -- WHOA! ... THESE GUYS HAVEN'T LEARNED A DAMN THING SINCE THE GREAT DEPRESSION; NOTHING THEN, NOTHING NOW AND GIVEN THE KIND OF ADVICE, PREDICTABLY GIVEN BY PHIL GRAMM, IT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE THEY'LL LEARN A DAMN THING IN THE FUTURE.
