McCain Tries Wooing Women Voters

July 12th 2008 12:58
McCain
Not to be out done by Obama, McCain held a townhall meeting on Friday to talk to women and discuss women's issues. It was pretty typical for the "Straight Talk Express", in that straight talk was rare and issues were twisted to better suit McCain's view of reality. But there was one big comment that made me spit my drink out when I read it.

"I'm for equal pay for equal work,'' said McCain to cheers. "I'm for equal opportunity in every aspect of our society.''

As soon as I stop laughing I'll be able to explain. Wait, let me catch my breath. Whew, that was hilarious! Coming from the man who opposed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act because it would open the door to more lawsuits, which was kind of, you know, part of the idea. Then flippantly passed off his opposition with comments that women really just need to get better education and more training, ignoring the women with equal or better education that still get paid less and have less of a chance at promotions.

From a CBS article on McCain's Townhall he was quoted claiming Obama was just trying to say the right things. As opposed to himself who has no clue what to say when asked honestly about women's issues. Birth control? Huh?

“Sen. Obama went on at great length about how much he cares about women’s issues,” McCain said at a women’s town hall meeting here. “My opponent was saying all the right things, but the fact is this: when you cut through all the smooth rhetoric, Sen. Obama’s policies would make it harder for women to start news businesses, harder for women to create or find new jobs, harder for women to manage the family budget, and harder for women and their families to meet their tax burden.”

Oh right, because tax cut for middle- and lower-income individuals and families, providing paid sick leave to workers, closing the gender gap in wages, and expanding child care tax credits would be such such a hardship for working women. I can totally see how those things would be a burden. Just comparing McCain's economic plans to Obama's I think should make clear how much "straight talk" really is going on here.
