McCain Verses The New York Times

Mccain
What if the press stopped giving McCain a break? What if when he made stupid comments, flub ups, or flat out lies the news media actually called him on it? Why, it might look a little bit like this

Thank you for sending me Senator McCain’s essay.

I’d be very eager to publish the senator on the Op-Ed page.

However, I’m not going to be able to accept this piece as currently written. I’d be pleased, though, to look at another draft. Let me suggest an approach.

The rejection of McCain's piece after the approval of Obama's was quite the slap to the face of Senator "But I'm A War Hero!" McCain, who has become accustomed to pats on the back and boxes of donuts from the press. With sprinkles no less! For those inquiring minds, however, you can read the infamous McCain editorial at The Drudge Report for yourself. Now one possible issue could be McCain's convenient ability to warp reality to fit his own views. Take this lovely quote from the article

To make this point, he mangles the evidence. He makes it sound as if Prime Minister Maliki has endorsed the Obama timetable, when all he has said is that he would like a plan for the eventual withdrawal of U.S. troops at some unspecified point in the future.

Really, Mccain, really? Is that so? Because I believe Maliki was quoted as being a little more specific than that. So McCain gives his own interpretation of events, the Times says "try again" in the most polite and non-confrontational way possible (because were it me I'd be calling bullshit a little more loud and clear), and then Fox News starts getting upset that their guy was censored. With a nice little poke in there about what flip-flopper Obama is, apparently changing his timetables on the war because the New York Times told him to. But wait, didn't you call it the "same old proposal" on his time table in your article?

“John McCain believes that victory in Iraq must be based on conditions on the ground, not arbitrary timetables. Unlike Barack Obama, that position will not change based on politics or the demands of the New York Times,” added McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds.

Of course we really can't expect much from McCain. He expects to be able to say Iran doesn't exist and not have anyone call him out on it. What's a little more"Straight Talk" going to hurt?

You're totally right...he was much to vague and tried to imply meaning when it was clearly missing.

Good catch
