Mexico: Is There Any Hope?
The stories out of Mexico continues to be as horrific as ever. I have been periodically writing about it by noting how the War on Drugs in Mexico probably constituted the biggest National Security Threat to the United States. It appears that there is a final realization of this.
The statistics are staggering. Some 28,000 people have died. Over 80,000 troops and police have been fighting the drug cartels. But, things have gone from bad to worst. Today's New York Times article noted how many areas in Mexico have basically been turned into "no-go" areas. The State Department's Travel Advisory is telling in terms of how simply terrible things are right now. What is even more unfortunate is how they're getting weapons from the United States.
The economic power that the cartel has amassed continues to grow by the hour. The Drug Industry is now a 39 Billion Dollar Industry. They have also diversified into human trafficking, extortion and kidnapping. Because in many areas they are in effect the State, how then can the State deal with it. What is unfortunate is that the corruption will work itself into the United States as the market in the U.S. continues to grow.
Calderon, the Mexican President, talked about the need to have the conversation about legalization and regulation. California is trying to do it with Marijuana. But, on the Federal level, the United States has opposed it. But, what the United states has done has simply not worked. Einstein noted a simple definition of insanity where it underscores the fact that doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result is simple ludricous. There needs to be a change for the sake of 100 Million Mexicans and 300 Million Americans Einstein's definition of insanity is very much the driving force. That convesration has to start now.
