Mr. Murdoch Speaks again.....
As a student of leadership and business, I am fascinated by Rupert Murdoch. I think that his son, Lachlan, was right when he noted that "there will only be one Rupert Murdoch". Despite my philosophical differences with him on vision and outlook, I take notice when he talks about his vision on where the news industry is going and the state of the newspapers in general.
At a recent conference, I read this statement from him: "....but I do certainly see the day when more people will be buying their newspapers on portable reading panels than on crushed trees...then we're going to have no paper, no printing plants, no unions. It's going to be great." He felt that it would take about 20 years for this transition to occur. I disagree. I think that the transition is full swing and it will be within the next five years. The implications of this are profound. It is truly up to those of us who have embraced New Media and Web 2.0 to act as responsbily as we can as we work to somehow fill that void and be the true voice of the responsible vs. simply being entertainers.
