Roxanna Saberi's Plight
April 8th 2009 22:16
I had written about Roxanna Saberi's Plight. She's a Freelance Journalist working in Iran and was detained by Iranian Authorities on some initial bogus charges. Now, they have accused her of spying.
I can't understand the paranoia the Iranian regime has over a journalist. Although Secretary Clinton's deep concern is welcome, the practical leverage the United States has is very minimal at this stage. Whatever evidence Iranian Judicial Authorities have is more than likely fabricated anyway. The smart thing for the Iranian Government is to encourage dialogue and discussions. Repression and the discouragement of dissent will do nothing but reinfroce a negative stereotype that would continue to play into the hands of the so-called rightwing in the West who are gunning for a fight with Iran anyway. I hope that the realists prevail.
