"Outsiders" Media Watch (7/25/2011): What a Change....
The Media around the World is fascinating. As someone who is a self-professed "New Media" practitioner, I view the changes as dizzying and continue to be amazed as to the changes going on.
As I write this, Al Jazeera is playing live in the background thru Livestation. Everyone has grown to appreciate and understand the power of Al Jazeera. When Hillary Clinton acknowledged the power of Al Jazeera and how it has grown to be the change agent, one understands the power of it ever more. This, of course, has given rise to what Prince Alaweed is trying to do with Rupert Murdoch's help to serve as an alternative due to the expanding partnership they have established through Prince Alaweed's hodlings in News Corp and the cross ownership by News Corp in Rotana.
The rise of big Media is something that should raise profound concerns. Among the major media players, all seem to be doing really well. What has happened to News Corp, though, has given a moment of pause to Rupert Murdoch and his plan and vision to "own the news". With all the investigations and questions around News Corporations' dealings around the world, it will be a while before it plays itself out. Fox News, though, will continue to be relentless in its' crusade against the Obama Adminstration in the United States. I do hope, though, that they would temper their criticism now that Adminstraiton Officials have appeared on Fox Programs to discuss on-going issues.
The one network I have been surprised to see suffer is CNN. It apparently continues to lag behind MSNBC and Fox in the United States and is still trying to a reason to be. I was shocked to see that "In the Arena" with former New York Governor Elliot Spitzer was cancelled and replaced with AC360. They seem to continue to change and revamp their lineup with nothing to show for it. What will be interesting to watch is the results of the British inquires into News Corporation and the reforms that would result because of it and the impact on US Media. There is one comment that I think is worth noting--and that comment happens to be from James Murdoch. He noted that his own company was under attack from Google and Apple. He felt that the only he could survive was to grow ever more. This unchecked growth gave us the scandals that has shocked the World. It is yet to play itself out.
