It has an historic year. We have lived through historic times. History was yet again made when the Palestinians submitted their bid for statehood to the UN during the current General Assembly Session.

One can not help but wonder where our World is going. But, this thought, courtesy of Jonathan Luckwood Huie, goes to the heart of what is important to remember and reflect upon while remembering to keep faith:

KU Tech Watch (9/20/2011): The Future

Over the past week or so, there has been new developments on the Tech Front. What I have decided to do is to dedicate the next number of months to think about the future and to build upon the top 25 trends outlined by leading thinkers in the Tech World as reported in the May 9, 2011 Edition of Network World. They are as follows:

1) You Will Talk to Your Computers ( Bernie Meyerson of IBM);
2) Technology will be transaparent ( Cisco's Evans);
3) Robots will outnumber humans (Marek Rusinkiewicz, Telcordia)
4) Optical Processors will replace microelectronics (Donald Newell, AMD)
5) Cameras will be everywhere (Marek Rusinkiewicz, Telcordia)
6) Terabit networks will be available at home (Cisco's Evans)
7) Networks will be programmable (Chipo Elliott, BBNTechnologies)
8) We will have a truly global internet and marketplace (Fred Baker, Cisco)
9) Quantum Computers will be possible
10) Smarter Networks are imminent
11) Storage will be cheap enough that you can record every minute of your life
12) Everything will be digitized and accessible over the internet
13) Computers will be more like humans
14) Content will be hyperpersonalized
15) Your Smartphone will have the power of a Supercomputer
16) Sensors will be pervasive and communicating over the internet
17) 3D telepresence systems will emerge
18) More of your assets will be virtual
19) Augumented reality will become common place
20) Computers will prevent problems from occuring
21) A fundementally different internet aarchitecture may evolve
22) Information Security will continue to be a Problem
23) An internet catasrophe will occur
24) Your Job may be outsoruced--to a computer (The Semantic Web)
25) Only the agile survive

These are the trends I will be researching and commenting on going forward. It is a tall order--but the future has arrived and we have to be ready for it.

"Outsiders" Americas Watch (9/18/2011): Fantasy vs. Reality

Friday again was not a good day for the US Economy. Unemployment claims continue to rise. Official Government figures say that the Economy will grow--but grow at a very slow pace.

Everyone I talk to is profoundly concerned. High Technology continues to grow. Medical Devices & Drugs continue to see grow spats. But, key manfacturing segments of the economy continue to lag. Construction, in my view, continues to be in a severe recession. Some may argue that it is in a severe depression

"Outtsiders" V-Thought For the Month (II)-August 2011

It has been a very busy month on the World Scene. Although I continue to be hopeful, the challenges continue to remain.

I have been thinking about the wars the US continues to fight in Iraq and Afghanistan. I undestand that the Adminstration has told us that combat operations have ended in Iraq, but the reality is far from it. Just within the past 24 hours, Iraqi insurgents attacked the largest Sunni Mosque in Baghdad on the eve of Eid-Al-Ftr, one of the holiest days in Islam

"Outsiders" Af-Pak Watch (8/15/2011): Reflections...

Afghanistan and Pakistan continue to be a challenges for the United States. I have decided to launch a weekly series here in "outsiders" to focus on Af-Pak becuase of the war that continues to rage on.

A day does not pass without someone dying or some bomb goes off in some part of Pakistan. Pakistan just celebrated its' indepedence. There were claims by the Adminstration noting how there were no collateral damage as the drone attacks continue on in Pakistan. Reporting by the Bureau of Investigative Journalists has noted how the US launches a drone attack on an average every 4 days. What I found especially disturbing was the death of 168 Children as noted in this report

Meanwhile In Iraq & Afghanistan.........

The debate in Washington about raising the debt limit is not yet over. I released a write-up on it earlier in KP's sister Site, Outsider Views. It is now common knowledge that part of the challenge the US faces economically is because of the two wars that the United States launched that is not paid for.

Iraq continues to be in a state of flux. A recent report that came out discussed how the security condition in the Country has continued to go from bad to worst. Bombings have continued. This is as Iraq has no permanent Government. Maliki came out right befor the advent of Ramadan to announce a streamlining of Ministers as the two key Ministries continue to stay vacant. The US is apparently trying to push the Iraqis into allowing a US contingent to remain. However, the fiscal calamity in the United States may preempt any further action as some of the very supposed savings called for in cutbacks call for a winddown on US committments in Iraq

"Outsiders" Media Watch (7/25/2011): What a Change....

The Media around the World is fascinating. As someone who is a self-professed "New Media" practitioner, I view the changes as dizzying and continue to be amazed as to the changes going on.

As I write this, Al Jazeera is playing live in the background thru Livestation. Everyone has grown to appreciate and understand the power of Al Jazeera. When Hillary Clinton acknowledged the power of Al Jazeera and how it has grown to be the change agent, one understands the power of it ever more. This, of course, has given rise to what Prince Alaweed is trying to do with Rupert Murdoch's help to serve as an alternative due to the expanding partnership they have established through Prince Alaweed's hodlings in News Corp and the cross ownership by News Corp in Rotana

"Outsiders" Thought 4 the Week: As America Celebrates the 4th of July....

Today is Independence Day in the United States. There will be celebrations throughout the United States. But, as it celebrates this day, America continues to be at a crossroads. This is ever more crucial as contenders for the Presidency try to advocate their vision for their view of Constitutional Government.

As this debate continues, I hope that the current contenders all remember what Jefferson said of the need to change with the times

"Outsiders" Economy Watch (7/3/2011): Navigating Thru the Minefields...

The Economy Watch will be a regular feature here going forward. As I wrote earlier KP's sister site, Outsider Views, the second half of 2011 promises to be a very challenging one especially in light of the fact that the United States will be in Election Season Mode and hardly anything will get done. This is as the prospect of a US Default looms ever more.

The Republicans have been on the record pushing for deep cuts in Federal Spending. They have been against any tax hikes, arguing that their effect on the Economy will be detrimental. This is, of course, as the Economy continues to grind to a halt. The analysis that John Mauldin did in his "View from the Frontlines" newsletter is scary enough. But there are rays of hope if the politicans have the courage to step up and make the tough choices

"Outsiders" Tech Watch (6/8/2011): The Gang of Four & Other Thoughts

It has been quite a year. But it seems as if that we continue to break down and milestones all the time.

I begin with what happened this past Monday. Steve Jobs emerged from his Medical Leave to roll out iCloud and iOs5. Although the services are not available til the fall, the idea was to simply make the ipod, the ipad and the iphone platform indepedent by allowing the data to reside in the "cloud". I thought Steve Jobs' "description' of the traditional View of the Cloud was quite interesting--but I think those of us who seem to try and get what is going with the h technology are of the view that there is truly more to the "Cloud"than simply it being a "disk in the sky". The idea of further music and document collaboration is also quite fascinating as the deadline of the fall rollout approaches
