President Obama's Screw-Up

Today was quite a day. Many have written about it. But, I think the President in a forthright way owned up to his mistake. It was refreshing for a leader to say, "I screwed up". I wrote about the distraction in Outsider Views. The White House seemed to have understood it. Daschle did too. The story should die, now. I think the many appointments the President has made are quite a calibre of people that would truly work to make a difference. One of the persons that I think is quite an appointment is Tammy Duckworth, the Iraq War Veteran who ran the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs. She was one of Blago's smarter picks.

I think the past two days has shown that Presidents are human. The key is to learn. We have to remember that they have been at it for about two weeks. They have to start making the tough choices, because Government is about choosing.

I'm glad he has taken "responsibility", but I still don't think he has explained himself. He claims to realize that he was at fault, but he didn't do anything to stop this fiasco. He defended Geithner (and helped get him confirmed). He defended Daschle vociferously, but it was Daschle who chose to step down. If Obama "got it", he would've publicly asked Daschle to step down. It's the same with the chief performance officer. She had to step down. Obama didn't pull the nomination. And I don't believe for a second that Obama secretly asked Daschle to step down. All the media reports I've heard have said that Obama was shocked when Daschle withdrew.

In the Anderson Cooper interview, Obama said that he was right to nominate Daschle. Really, O? Really? Everyone on the planet knew Daschle was a lobbyist before he was nominated. Even if Obama didn't know about the tax mess, that lobbying background should've disqualified Daschle. So I wonder what Obama is taking responsiblity for. I don't think he gets it. He seems as tone deaf as the rest of Washington.

Nevertheless, this will pass if he doesn't have any more problems with nominees -- especially if he can do something to fix the economy (a BIG if).

I found the taking of responsibility refreshing as well, but it was surprising to see the president get into this kind of trouble in the first place. Normally, he's more careful than that. I still think he'll be an excellent president, but it seems that he's still got a lot to learn.

Hi there,

Thanks for all the comments...much appreciate it...

In the round of interviews on Tuesday, Obama noted that he expects to be judged on whether he turned the economy around or not. So, I think he understands the stakes. The question is whether the Congress will do its' part. That's the bothersome part in my view.
