RIP Jesse Helms
July 4th 2008 17:58
News has spread today that former Senator Jesse Helms of North Carolina passed away today.
Helms had quite the reputation as a Republican that many loved to hate. His racist comments have made him well known in all areas of the political sphere. From his filibuster of making Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday a national holiday to his musical styling of singing "Dixie" to Carol Moseley-Braun, the first African-American woman elected to the Senate Helms had a reputation of never letting his feeling towards African Americans go unknown.
Of course his contempt for people was much broader than just those with darker skin. Helms was also well know for his disgust with homosexuals, often claiming that all cases of AIDS were caused by homosexuality and calling them "weak, morally sick wretches".
Though he attempted to soften his image in the later years of his life Helms legacy of hatred has been cast in stone by his own words and actions.
