Over the past 36 hours, I have been reading up on Robert C. Byrd and the tributes. I also had a chance to visit the write-ups released by members of the Orble Community.
As I read up about him (and will continue to do so), there was one tidbit of his life that truly moved me. He graduated from high school at the top of his class, but could not afford to go to College. But, he began a process of lifelong self-education that showed that truly anything was possible. He also went to law school to receive a law degree. It took him 10 years!!! But he did it and got his degree from President Kennedy:
This accomplishment is what America is about. He never forgot his humble roots and truly understood what was going on in Main Street.
I have always had the highest regard for Senator Byrd because he stood for what was right. He believed in the Constitution, believed in the Legislative Branch and his opposition to the War in Iraq was courageous. His speech on Iraq moved me greatly. It took courage to go against the grain as the War Possee was on its way. To top it off, I nearly fell off my chair when I found out about an editorial he wrote basically noting how Coal was destroying West Virginia and the time had come to go beyond Coal. It took guts!!!!
May the Lord bless the soul of the People's Servant who truly embraced Public Service and made a difference!!!.
