Roxana Saberi's Continued Plight (An Update)
Roxana Saberi was sentenced to eight years for spying. The trial was held in secret with no opportunity for a case to be presented by Ms. Saberi's Lawyer. For all of us who believe in the Freedom of Speech, it is a dark day indeed
I have just visited the Islamic Republic Agency Website to see if there was any word on Ms. Saberi's detention. The only thing I saw was in a section IRNA attributes to rumors. It is, I suppose, their version of People Magazine whereby it attributes comments by Ms. Saberi's lawyers. I also was digging through the Judiciary's Website and saw nothing. I did comments attributed to Ahmadinjead asking the world to respect the "independence" of the Iranian Judiciary to be laughable, though.
I view her case as part of a larger struggle. Iran is the midst of a political campaign to select the next President. She is trying to find a way to begin re-engaging with the United States. It appears that Ms. Saberi has been caught in this struggle. Once this plays out, I think that Khameini will probably pardon her and kick her out of the country. For her sake and the sake of her family, I hope I'm right.
