The Afghan Soap Opera: The Past 24 Hours

General Petraus has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate on a 99-0 vote to assume command of the Afghan War. He sure has his work cut out for him. He has been credited with "saving" Iraq. He himself noted that Iraq was turned around and "knock on wood", it will continue to be so. Yet, as of now, Iraq is yet to have a fully functioning Government. I wouldn't call that success.

As for the political soap opera in Washington, well it goes on. What I find pathetic is how the Congress has finally somehow figured out that things are not going well in Afghanistan. As I have continued to note in my daily write-ups here and in KP's sister site, Outsider Views, the insurgency is raging and is spreading througout the country. General Petraus is only one man, not a miracle worker. Now, there has been a vote to strip 4 Billion Dollars off the Afghan Aid Budget to object to corruption going on. Where have they been all these years?

Eric Holder is in Afghanistan noting that he has sent some of his most experienced prosecutors and marshalls to help the Afghans. This is as the Afghan Attorney General has said that he has been thrawted in his work investigating corruption. It is in the midst of this political soap opera in Kabul and Washington that General Petraus assumes command.

The drama continues......

KP Week-End (6/6/2010): Justice Finally Arrives

Natalee Halloway was a young U.S. teenager who had just graduated and was spending her summer in Aruba. She was never to see America again. She disappeared in Aruba. Her mother and family fought a valiant effort to bring her alledged killer to justice. They were not successful because the 22-year Dutch kid got away in part due to the incompetence of the judicial folks in Aruba.

As I remember those months that Beth Halloway, Natalee's Mother, was on US Cable News, I wondered whether the kid was going to finally shoot himself in the foot. Well, that moment occurred. The kid was picked up in Chile after being implicated in the death of a Peruvian Girl. This showed that there is justice. I hope that they throw the book at him, jail him for life and throw away the key. It won't bring his victims back, but will at least allow their souls to rest in peace and allow their families some degree of closure.

A Need for Angels in the midst of so much misery

Kitten politics and its' sister sites has been dedicated to the discussions of our world and to be as bold, thought provking and fair as possible. But, as the world we live in is reported on and reflected upon, sometimes there are people that we run across that we believe are role models for all to follow. One such notable is Lorena Ochoa, the Mexican Golfer. Ms. Ochoa is one of the top Lady Golfers in the world. She has used her winnings to make a difference by building a school in her native Mexico and has plans for a high school. May Mexico be blessed with such Angels who can make such a difference as it continues to fight s one of its' most violent wars in its' tumulous history......

Roxanna Saberi's Plight

I had written about Roxanna Saberi's Plight. She's a Freelance Journalist working in Iran and was detained by Iranian Authorities on some initial bogus charges. Now, they have accused her of spying.

I can't understand the paranoia the Iranian regime has over a journalist. Although Secretary Clinton's deep concern is welcome, the practical leverage the United States has is very minimal at this stage. Whatever evidence Iranian Judicial Authorities have is more than likely fabricated anyway. The smart thing for the Iranian Government is to encourage dialogue and discussions. Repression and the discouragement of dissent will do nothing but reinfroce a negative stereotype that would continue to play into the hands of the so-called rightwing in the West who are gunning for a fight with Iran anyway. I hope that the realists prevail

Oscar Night: My Choice For Best Picture

Tonight is Oscar's Night. My choice is Slumdog Millionaire. It shows a beautiful story of rags to riches. Who cares that it does not happen to be a "Hollywood" movie. This is entertainment at its' best. I think Hollywood can truly learn a thing or two from Bollywood. This is why I am a Bollywood Fan:

McCain: The Anti-Choice Zealot

McCain
The New Republic has a great article up regarding McCain and his anti-choice views. His reputation as a moderate slowly slips away as more and more people learn about his real views. Such as his opposition to Roe v. Wade and his desire to fill the Supreme Court with ultra-conservatives. Out of his 130 votes on reproductive heath, McCain voted anti-choice on 125 of them, which includes the global gag rule that prevented funds to international family-planning clinics.

The opening of the article shows a glimpse of the real McCain

Did You Hear About Edwards

John Edwards
So John Edwards has admitted to an affair. Yes, I think it's crappy that he had the affair while his wife was sick with cancer. But I'm also not putting it at the top of my need to know news list. Why?

Well in case you haven't noticed there has been some actually important news going on. Other than which politician is sleeping with or has slept with whom. Like the war between Russia and Georgia. The return of the South Dakota abortion consent law. Back peddling and avoiding the questions were had by all in the attempts at labeling birth control as abortions. And over in Sweden they are looking at mandatory castration for transgendered people. It's just been a busy weekend, so Edwards sex life has had to take a backseat.

Birth Control - Period Control?

birth control

Don't tell certain guys this, but birth control might not only be about stopping babies. It might, dare I say it, have something to do with hormones and certain female bodily functions

Reports Of Women Raped After Drinking Goes Up

scared woman
Let's play a game of Blame the Victim. I'll start: a woman goes out, has a few drinks, is feeling drunk, and suddenly a man comes along and rapes her. Who gets the blame? If you said the rapist you would be wrong.

Sex, Sluts, and Cosmopolitan

As a mom of sons there are such some things that I hope to make my sons understand in their lifetime. Certain issues that I hope to have ingrained in them. Things such as "No means no" and "Ask before touching", little nuggets of wisdom that both help them now when fighting over shared toys and will certainly help them later as grown men. Another helpful lesson is not to call women sluts based on something as frivolous as what they choose to read. Mona Charen, syndicated columnists and author, disagrees with my parenting ideals. In an interesting tidbit of daily life Charen let us in on how the right-wing talking heads prefer to raise their sons.

Funny you should mention that. I was in the supermarket yesterday with my 14-year-old son who asked "What's up with Cosmopolitan? What is that?" I replied, "It's a magazine for sluts."

Save The Babies, But Let The Sluts Suffer With HIV

Time and time again the so called "pro-life" movement has shown it's true colors by being pro anything but life. At least not life as most people know it, in a thinking, feeling, living human being. It seems that once again the "pro-life" people have stepped up to say they are absolutely against life.

HIV
To celebrate National HIV Testing Day a group from Planned Parenthood made arrangements to pass out fliers at a local Wal-Mart. Despite what the extreme anti-choice like to claim, the fliers were in no way attempting to give porn and birth control to kindergarteners. What that would even have to do with HIV testing and prevention is beyond me anyways
