The Curse of History in Afghanistan: Will America Learn?
I have been spending the day writing about the year and think about the challenges ahead. Although I am trying to be optimistic, realizing the realities on the ground gives me great cause for concern. I continue to be especially worried about Afghanistan as the year draws to a close. The reporting by Al Jazeera on the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan featuring Veterans of the Soviet Afghan Campaign is chilling.
This interview by a Soviet Veteran is indicative of the challenges America will face as it prosecutes the war. As a student of history, I continue to remain leary of the President's plan. The surge ordered by President Obama will be a bust. For America's sake, I hope I am wrong. We shall see as we embrace 2010.
