What shocked me was that Richard Engel was due to be on one of three helicopters that ultimately got cut down to two. The people who died included DEA Agents and Soldiers. This is another reason why I think that President Obama's deliberative review is ever more important. I wrote about it in KP's Sister Site, Outsider Views. But, I also believe that The President needs to make a decision and make it soon. The two Afghan Presidential aspirants, though, are calling for a massive committment of troops. How the U.S. is going to swing it is a problem. John Kerry seems to be against it. I caught a glimpse of him speaking at the Council of Foreign Relations and talked about his conversation with Karzai. One of the things that particuarly caught my ear was his view that Karzai's Brother's reputed role as a drug runner and a weapons supremo is hyped up. He seemed to be giving an implicit vote of confidence to Karzai by noting that Karzai recognized the need for "change". I think Karzai had 8 years. Why did it take him 8 years to realize that he needs to change? I am with Clive Cook of the Financial Times when he noted in his column about the strategic mistake the U.S. made in not realizing the extent of the fraud and now the price that is being paid for.
America and the World continues to pay with blood, sweat and tears while the Afghan ruling elite fights. Afghanistan and Iraq knocked off another war off the front pages of the US media though. A shocking development happened in the Pakistan-Iran Border. The Pakistanis detained 11 members of Iranian Security Forces after a shoot-out in the lawless region that saw 5 senior Iranian Revolutionay Guard Commanders be assassinated. Pakistan continues to be in a fight for its life and the US has opened up the second front to go after the insurgents who have taken sanctuary in Pakistan right now. The Pakistanis have to be held to account. There is no other option.
