The Evolution of Obama's Justice Department
The head of the U.S. Justice Department Anti-Trust Division, Christine Varney, has reversed the handoffs approach of the Bush Adminstration. The new strategy is to be more in line with the aggressive stance the European Union has taken. It has been this aggressive stance which derailed a number of major mergers and forced Microsoft to pay out some rather hefty fines.
Why is this important? To me, it is simple: Justice is going back to its' core mission of enforcing laws and not being a political arm of the White House. Some within the conservative community will not like it because it will signal a move towards "socialism". But, this laissez Faire approach resulted in media consolidation and the financial disaster we are faced with today. The need to insure competition is the ultimate objective of the Anti-Trust laws. It is high time!!!!
