The Lebanese Elections

Lebanon

Another milestone is about to arrive. The Lebanese will be going to the polls in three days. Rigt now, Hizballah is positioned to be the majority party and sideline the so-called March 14 coalition. U.S. Officials have been in Beirut implicity urging a vote against Hizballah. I am fearful that if Hizballah wins, there is going to be another so-called Gaza Strategy whereby the results of the Palestinian Election were ignored by the International Community. It has led to the impasse.

Leabnon is different. Although it is still a clan and family dominated politics (Gemayels, Harriris, Jumbalats), I sense a realization that all must learn to live together. Right now, I was gratified to see statement by the Maronite Christinian Bishops. The Daily Star reports that the bishops urged the people of Lebanon to accept the results with great enthusiasim. I hope that the world does the same as well.
