The National Day of Service: My Day
I took up Mr. Obama's call to contribute on the National Day of Service. I went out with my son to a local grocery store to help with collecting food for a local food bank.
When I read about the President-Elect's call, I dug around to see where I can go. I found a few events that I signed up for. This organization I got hooked up with who spreadheaded it was a group called Generation Change. It was one of many organizations that sprung up as a result of the Barack Obama campaign. This organization are just a few concerned citizens who got together for the sake of the community. I also found out that this group was a group that made over 54,000 phone calls during the Obama Presidential Campaign. I also was so amazed when I found out over half this organization were Republicans.
As we continued our shift, I was especially proud of my little boy and how he engaged people to ask them to contribute to this cause. How we was so excited and engaged was indeed an inspiration to me. As we approached the people coming into the local Ralphs, there were always those who either ignored our requests and walked away. Some were just simply rude. The biggest high for me was how we made a difference. This spirit I saw was amazing.
As America continues to be overtaken by inauguration fever, everyone has to continue to take up the call to action and get involved. The obligation is ever more in light of the profound challenges we face now. But, let's celebrate the day for all that it means and the promise it represents. We are indeed not alone:
