The New South African Cabinet
I have followed with great interest the Cabinet announced by the new President, Jacob Zuma. I had hoped that Trevor Manuel be retained as Finance Minister and Barbara Hogan as Health Minister. But, the President decided to make a change.
From what I have seen, Mr. Manuel's new position is actually a promotion of sorts. As I listened to President Zuma, I think he is absolutely right that one cannot expect a minister to stay forever. I also think that Trevor Manuel's immense talents can be best used to help the Government's five year plan.
There are two other appointments I thought was quite strategic: the appointment of the caretaker President as Deputy President and the appointment of a leading White Afrikanner as a Deputy Minister in his Government. Hopefully he will work to build upon what Nelson Mandela started. I wish him success for the sake of his country, his region and the continent.
