The Plight of Children in Afghanistan
I saw a very disturbing report in BBC's Persian TV Service about parents forced to sell their children to sustain themselves. The shocking nature of the report gave me further pause. Richard Holbrooke has more on his hands than to simply help bring peace. There are some fundemental structural challenges in Afghanistan that would require a lot more innovative thinking than what is currently being pursued.
As I have been thinking about Afghanistan, I am heartened by President Obama's committment to be different and do different. But, eradicating this misery and depravation will take a lot more than simple gestures. Karzai the idiot needs to be aware that he has seen Afghanistan to the ground. He seems to be the only one who does not understand it. He should have listened to the BBC broadcast to get a feel of how bad things are. Adherence to the Law is a good thing. But, when people are desparate, they will do what they need to do.
