The Stevens Retirement

The past week has been abuzz about the retirement of Justice John Paul Stevens. Justice Stevens is the Senior Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court who has been at the forefront of being a bulwark against the on-going expansive conservative activist trend that the Court has been on. The battle lines are being formed.

The Conservatives are telling the country that they want someone who will not legislate from the bench. The 30-year crusade against the judiciary has done more to politicize the judiciary than anything else. The Court is truly majestic and maintains a special place in the U.S. system of Government. Unfortunately, the Court's current Chief Justice has continued a radical shift towards an activism that has not been seen. What I worry about is the continued shift toward a polarization that seems to be growing like a cancer which is unstoppable. John Roberts complained about how political the state of the Union has become. He has to step back and really consider the Citizens United Case and how it has truly transformed the landscape.

Every Senator, in my view, has to really sit down and watch the West Wing Clips available on Tube. There needs to be a level of maturity shown by all because of the solemn responsbility at hand. Why are the Senators acting like children?
