These Kids Today

voting box
Oh the youth of America. They lack responsibility, they're self-centered, they are flighty.

At least that's the negative remarks that get passed around so often. That the youth of today aren't willing to step up and take control of their lives like young people were doing 50 years ago. Just ask anyone about the dreaded "Millennials" and you will hear how we are destroying America every morning we get out of bed.

So finding young people who are willing to step up and be a part of something huge, like politics, would be a good thing. Right? They are breaking out of the carefree mold and self centered lifestyle. Well, apparently not if those young people are voting Democratic.

We regularly hear about Barack Obama's appeal to youth, about how he has been able to excite and mobilize a generation of young people to become politically involved, his rare ability to excite young people, and about how many new voters will register (and vote Democrat) as a result.

All this seems to be true. The question, however, is whether it is a good thing for the country and not just for Barack Obama and the Democratic Party.

The answer is that it probably is not. With a few exceptions -- and those exceptions are usually those rare cases when young people confront dictatorships -- when youth get involved in politics in large numbers, it is not a good thing.

I can't say that I expect much better from someone who thinks the 60s begun the downward spiral of society. Just look at where we have come since then in terms of equal rights, equal opportunities, and personal freedom. Most like to Dennis Prager the fact that a black man has the audacity to attempt to be president is enough proof that our society is damaged beyond repair. My gods, what next! Women demanding equal pay for equal work, homosexuals demanding to be treated like actual human beings, or people of different races wanting to get married.

Personally I encourage more young people to get involved. Not only in politics but in other areas that can better their communities and their countries. What Prager calls a
unique combination of naivete, lack of wisdom, romantic idealism and narcissism.

I see as still having the ability to have empathy, compassion, and human decency.

I think kids today are way more politically aware and savvy than those of previous generations, even the 60's.
