Tidbits of Politics This Week
I took a little time off to think through the year and "way forward". But, I could not believe how this week has been a very, very busy week. This has been a week that has seen the start of Copenhagen, the start of the Afghan Surge and the continued debate over healthcare. As I contemplating 2009, gearing up "outsider"s for 2010, I continue to be worried about Afghanistan. As it stands, this is not going to work. How this war is to be turned around with 34,000 troops is something I can't truly understand. Tariq Ali reminded us of the challenges:
In a recent interview on the Real News, Lawerence Wilkinson recently noted that just to repair the U.S. Army will cost 100 Billion Dollars. He also noted how the increased militarization of the decision making process is something that we have to really guard against. We have to figure out how to really work with the rest of the world and not bomb everyone to the stone age!!
America's strength should be its' economic base and its' ideals. Yet, there is that push to overcome this with a sense of pure power which continues to concern me a great deal.
As the war continues to be fought, there is a concerted effort to reform healthcare. Healthcare, as it stands, seems to be the way to be dead. Progressives are celebrating medicare's expansion. But, the fight is not over by any means.
