Tuesday Nov 3, 2009 is Election Day: A Preview

This coming Tuesday is another election day in the United States. There are two major Governors' races, plus the Mayor of New York City and a very interesting Congressional Race in Northern New York State. The lines are clearly drawn.

Based on the latest review I have done with twenty four hours to go, it appears that New Jersey is too close to call. It appears that the Republicans will take the Governorship in Virginia. It also is likely that Mike Bloomberg, the Billionarie Mayor of New York City, will get his third term. What I found staggering was that he has spent 65 Million Dollars of his own money to get back into office. His Democratic Challenger, Bill Thomspon, has not even come close. But, it is the New York 23rd that is fascinating. The Conservative Wing of the Party saw to it that the establishment candidate got literally ran out of town. The GOP establishment's candidate sin was that she was not "Conservative" enough--whatever that means.

The GOP establishment candidate has come out in support of the Democratic Candidate. Whether that will change things is apparently not clear. What is clear is that the civil war within the Republican Party will continue. I do find the confidence of the Republicans quite striking. Ed Gillespie was on ABC News' this week saying that there is a chance that the Republicans will take the House. Michael Steele has said that the elections are a referendum on the President Obama. But, the same Republicans seem to forget 1982. I remember how the Republicans took quite a beating during the midterms. I remember President Reagan noting that one of the few highlights of the night was California.

The polls are the polls. But it is clear that the conservatives continue to be on the ascendancy within the Republican Party. It may be well be time for alternative political forces to be developed to bring a new sense of vitaility to the political process. The ascendancy of the candidacy of the Conservative Party candidate in New York State may well be the beginning of a trend. I eagerly await Wednesday November and the results.
